Important New Bedford and Nantucket history. Recent studies suggest that Gardner who was seriously injured by a whale was the subject and model for Melville's Captain Ahab. No internal marks or imprints. "Captain Edmund Gardner of Nantucket and New Bedford, Mass., His Journal and His Family. Includes important lists and charts of the family genealogy. Signed, dated 1965 and inscribed by the author on the front endpaper. Also signed by Bullard on the title page. Very rare signed in this condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
