First edition with original brown cloth boards. 422 pages. Measures 5.5" x 8". Book deals with the history of prison life in the South, principally at Richmond, Danville, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Belle Isle, Millin, Salisbury, and Andersonville. Describes the arrival of prisoners and plans of escape, with incidents and anecdotes of prison life. Also covers the adventures of the author's escape from Columbia, South Carolina, his recapture, subsequent escape, recapture, trial as spy, and final escape from Sylvania, Georgia. 12 Illustrations throughout including a portrait of the author, the capture-cavalry fight at Buckland Mills, Libby Prison, interior views of the Andersonville Prison and others. Worn gilt lettering on cover with some wear, rubbing, some chipping on edges and spine. A number of leaves loose but is complete nonetheless. Some edge tears on pages but nothing that impairs the clarity of images or text. Ex-library copy with official stamp (the Department of Public Welfare's "Geriartic" Centre in Toronto). It also has a former owner's name in pencil "Maria S. Havens / 228 Colonie St. / Albany". Good to very good condition.
