Sobre este artículo

New York: Carlton & Porter, 1858. Facsimile of 1858 Third Edition . Hard Back. Fine/No Dust Jacket. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2. 290 Pages plus Two Pages of Notices to The Press. Gold title on embossed brown leatherette. Brand new gift quality book with no marks or stamps. Interior text pages are bright, white, and tight. This is a book in the Classics of the Old West series. Facsimile of the 1858 Carlton & Porter Third Edition. Stated on the title page Twenty-Seventh Thousand. The first two editions are considerably harder to find. Included are Prefaces to First, Second, and Third Editions. In 1851, nine members of the Oatman family - on their way by covered wagon to California - were savagely attacked by Apache Indians near Fort Yuma, Arizona. Two girls in the family, Olive Ann, 14, and Mary Ann, 8, were taken captive by their attackers. An older brother, Lorenzo, 15, was left for dead but managed, though gravely wounded, to make his way back to civilization. The rest of the family had been brutally massacred. The story of the Oatman girls - their despairing life in captivity, the tragic death of little Mary Ann from shock, poor food, and severe conditions a year after their capture, and their brother's five-year search for them - is vividly described in this riveting true-life story. Illustrated with sixteen drawings and a map. Contents in Seven Chapters: The First Encampment, Mr. and Mrs. Oatman in Perplexity, Lorenzo Oatman Conscious of Most of The Scenes of the Massacre, The Journey of 350 Miles to the Mohave Valley, The Moves Their Sports, Lorenzo Oatman His Stay at Fort Yuma, and Francisco Goes Over the River and Spends the Night.
