This paperback precedes the Metheun hardback edition of the same year. The Caretaker was Pinter's first commercial success and continues to be one of his most celebrated and performed works. It has been subject to "every possible interpretation: psychological, political, theological, ethological... it is a closely observed study of the way, in any social context, there is a constantly shifting balance of power" (ODNB). Octavo. Original black and white wrappers, printed in white and black, wire-stitched as issued. Slight rubbing to extremities and rear wrapper, a near-fine copy.
