According to the author's preface, "The object of this work is to narrate the principal events in the history of Carmel-by-the Sea, to point out and illustrate the natural attractions and beauties to those unacquainted with them, to give a summary of its art and literary background, and to outline a tour of its chief points of interest, including the most intereting shops, walks, and drives, concluding with the famous Seventeen Mile Drive."
