Orff relates in "Carl Orff und sein Werk in 8 Bänden" that he purchased his copy from the catalog of an antiquarian dealer in Würzburg. When he opened the book to the first page showing the image of the Goddess Fortune with the Wheel of Fate, he saw the opening text, "O Fortuna, velut luna statu variablis". He relates he was suddenly overwhelmed by words and images that produced the beginnings of his composition: "Obwohl ich mich fürs erste nur in großen Zügen mit dem Inhalt der Gedichtsammlung vertraut machen konnte, stand sofort win neues Werk, ein Bühnenwerk mit Sing- und Tanzchören, nur den Bildern und Texten folgend, in Gedanken vor mir. Noch am selben Tag hatte ich eine Paticell-Skizze vom ersten Chor 'O Fortuna' entworfen. Nach einer schlaflosen Nacht, in der ich mich in der umfangreichen Gedichtsammlung fast verloren hätte, war auch ein zweiter Chor, 'Fortune plango vulnera' enstanden, und am Ostermorgen war ein dritter, Ecce gratum, zu Papier gebracht." ; laid in is a copy, in red illustrated paper wrappers, of the brochure for the concert, "Musik auf Schloss Kirchheim 1972 harmonia mundi Konzerte", SIGNED BY CARL ORFF on the title page of the brochure; the volume of Carmina Burana is an important musical source and Carl Orff collectible ; rare ; FINE; FINE.
