Previous owner name neatly written on blank free endpapers and a name clipped from the top of the title pages, otherwise very good, bright and clean copies throughout. Early full tan calf bindings with raised bands to the spines. Compartments double gilt ruled. Red title labels, gilt. Some minor wear to the extremities but overall very good and attractive bindings. ---- Complete as published, these first two volumes of Stern's Sermons of Mr. Yorrick, published anonymously in 1760, were added to at a later date with another five volumes issued between 1766 and 1769.

This is a very representative copy of the 'Centenary Edition' of the poetry of Robert Burns. Bound by the famous Bayntun (Riviére) bindery in Bath in decorative half leather and cloth covered boards. The spines have five raised bands, gilt lettering on morocco labels and gilt tooling to compartments. Top edges gilt. Bindings remain generally clean, some ligth surface streaks to leather on some boards. Joints rubbed,some cracking mainly to upper joints resulting in a little movement to boards, others remain firm. This book, published in Livorno, Italy in 1797, was a study into the behaviors expected in a Jewish synagogue and temple – or simply a Jewish guide to sanctuary. Notably, Livorno became a hub for Jewish immigrants in the 17th-century and their presence only grew throughout the Medici rulership. Curiously though, it wasn't until 1780, when Livorno government reorganized, that Jews were declared eligible for various positions in the general court. Charles Marie de La Condamine was an 18th-century French explorer who studied the geography. A French-Spanish expedition was sent to South America and the Arctic region in 1735, to determine the size and shape of the earth. The two expeditions proved that the earth is flattened at the Poles. La Condamine, a scientist on the expedition, returned home by crossing Brazil via the Amazon making it
'the first scientific exploration of the Amazon… The greatest geographical event of the eighteenth century as regards South America" (Hill).

1730 1ed Slavery Voyages of Marchais AFRICA Whydah Maps Labat Sea Monsters 2v

Jean-Baptiste Labat was a 17th-century Frenchman known for his eclectic interests including exploration. His most famous works concern voyages in America, the West Indies, and the Caribbean. In 1730, Labat published an account of the voyages of Reynaud Desmarchais, a captain of slave ship that sailed exclusively between the African Gold Coast and the West Indies.
'Voyage du Chevalier des Marchais en Guinée' describes many of the procedures and regulations that were involved in slave trade as well as the economic and commercial influence of slavery. In addition to discussions on slaves, Labat includes information on fish, animals, geography, and …sea monsters! (i.e. sharks).
These volumes from the 1730 first edition include 27 exquisite illustrations including a view of the coronation procession of the King of Whydah.
