Sobre este artículo

Near fine: a couple of very minor scratches on spine, a little fraying at head of spine, slipcase shows a little shelf wear. Interior of volume and front and back boards are pristine.

This volume was a personal gift from Rainier III, Prince of Monaco (1923 - 2005) to the eminent medievalist Kenneth M. Setton (1914 – 1995) on the occasion of a visit by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace to her hometown of Philadelphia in the 1960's. (Professor Setton was at the time Director of Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania.) Bound into the volume is the prince's card, with a note in his handwriting to professor Setton.

This is a deluxe binding on heavy hand-laid paper with deckled edges and gilt page tops. It is one of a limited number of copies; this copy however is not numbered, apparently because it came from the royal family. It appears to be similar to the 400 Papeteries du Marais exemplars as the pages do not bear the watermarked arms of the Grimaldi family. This edition was published on 11 April, 1951, the inauguration date of François Cogné's bronze statue of Prince Albert as a sailor in Monaco's Jardin St. Martin. Preface by Prof. Paul Portier (1866 - 1962), a physician and physiologist who was also the Director of the Institut Océanographique in Monaco and Paris. He accompanied Prince Albert on many of his voyages.

Albert I (Albert Honoré Charles Grimaldi [1848 – 1922]) was Prince of Monaco from 1889 to 1922. He was a political reformer, naval officer, archeologist, paleontologist, oceanographer and member of the British Academy of Science. He sponsored a number of arctic expeditions and was well-known for his scientific achievements.

These autobiographical reminiscences are quite readable; the prince writes very well and his prose frequently approaches poetry.

European history, with a loose focus on the late medieval/early Renaissance period, including the Crusades; some first or contemporary editions from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; some scholarly works in English, French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Catalan, Russian. Some works from the libraries of Reeve Shley at Ripplebrook; John L. La Monte; Kenneth M. Setton; Howard Ellison Whitney; Wilhelmina, Duchess of Cleveland; Washington Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers, Joseph Harrison Brazier; Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.Also some exotic Americana and other eclectic gems that have serendipitously popped up over the years."I just wanted to say that the service and quality of the book received from 'Setton Book Collection' was exceptional. I am very pleased with the book: A Narrative of the Conversion and Death of Count Struensee. 5 star service all the way.Best Regards,Pete,London, England13 October 2020
