George Robins, London, [ Hazen's fifth edition], 1842. Cloth-backed wrappers, small 4to, 27 cm,. xxiv, 250 pp, engraved title-page by Landells after a design by Delamotte. frontispiece portrait of Walpole lithographed by G.E. Madeley after a portrait by Eckhardt. Hazen identifies seven editions of this famous catalogue, of which this is Edition V : "The Waldegrave manuscripts (Sixth Day, lots 161-87) are removed; otherwise the lots are as in Edition IV. Some textual corrections on about two-thirds of the pages used to catalogue the books in the library. Edition V was the final revision of Days 7 and 8 before the books of prints were entirely recatalogued for the London sale. Red stamp on verso of the title-page "Suscipere et finire, ex Bibliotheca Ernesti Aug. Hannov. Regis" (the library of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover (1771-1851). King Ernest was the fifth son of King George III of England and Queen Charlotte - and was born and educated at Kew, close to Strawberry Hill. Covers spotted and somewhat browned and marked; foxing to front endpapers, frontispiece and engraved title-page, otherwise just occasional spots and one or two marks to margins; tears to head and tail of rear joint and some minor loss to top edge of front wrapper and to rear free endpaper, internally a Good clean copy with an interesting provenance: Walpole's Memoirs of the Reign of King George III had not been flattering to the owner's father.
