A very nice edition with a new preface by Heller on pages 11-15 that provides a wonderful background of the novel when it first appeared. What will interest those who love the novel is how difficult it was for him to get anything other than articles published and how he finally received a $1500 advance which kept him going. A handsome copy bound in blue cloth, spine lettering gilt, housed in publisher's red paper covered slipcase lettered in gilt.

In a near fine unclipped wrapper a few light handling marks to the rear panel. Five reviews to the rear panel. A really lovely example of the dust wrapper. Accompanying the book is a typescript with the opening line: "It was love at first sight", SIGNED in black ball point by Joseph Heller. 8.5 x 11" - headed 'The Texan' being Chapter One of 'Catch 22'. "It was love at first sight. The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him..." Signed at the conclusion in black ink, "Joseph Heller". Both book and letter in excellent condition.

Hampton, N.Y."] bearing several ink corrections in the author's hand, dated June 28, 1964. Accompanied by a stamped envelope also addressed to Professor James Nagel of Northeastern University, Boston, Mass, postmarked "June 2[5?], 1968, Smithtown, N.Y.," and typed [presumably by Heller].<br/> <br/> "Joe" Heller writes "Jim" Nagel to to inquire about his new collection of critical essays about Heller's famous novel Catch-22. The author asks for a set of bound galleys of those essays. Evidently, one of the essayists got his facts wrong. In response, Heller relates what actually occurred during his last days in the Army Air Force. He was employeed in PR but couldn't recall doing anything.
