Stipple engraving of Catherine of Braganza as queen, with her hair in ringlets, wearing a loose gown and mantle fastened on her right shoulder. She is seated with her left hand on an open book beside a crown and feeding a lamb with her right. First published in 1826 in the folio edition of Edmund Lodge's Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain. Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705), wife of Charles the Second, was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1662 to 1685. After she returned to Portugal as a widow, she served as regent of Portugal in 1701, 1704, and 1705. She is credited with popularizing tea drinking, common among the Portuguese nobility, to the English court. In Very Good Condition: minimal light foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.
