Very clean and unmarked green cloth binding with gilt title and design on spine, light rubbing of lower corners and spine heel. Sewn binding tight and solid, square with sharp corners. Internals are quite clean, no markings of any kind, no creasing. Rear paste-down paper was affixed slightly off center in production. Catherine, Empress of Russia, 1729-1796. Catherine' s reign was marked by increased contact with the West. At the time, French culture was predominant in Russia and she took part in the intellectual life of the continent. The beginning of her reign promised liberalization of the regime in Russia but she changed course as a result of the peasant uprising in1773-74 and the French Revolution. 349 pages including Sources and Notes, and Index. 6.5 x 9.75 inches.
