Philadelphia: Hubbard Bros, 1876. Hardcover. Good. An incomplete copy of the first edition, a salesman's sample. Octavo. 744pp., followed by "Souvenir Edition" advertisement [5]pp. Illustrated with numerous wood engravings with one folded plate depicting two centennial halls, lacking the fold-out map. Rebound in brown cloth with gilt-stamped title and Liberty Bell on the front board and exact image blind-embossed on rear board, original gilt-stamped spine affixed onto front pastedown and an addition spine affixed to rear pastedown. Lacking the last 26 pages with only half of the "Map of Centennial Grounds, Philadelphia" present, extremities worn, a good only copy.

Illustrated with over 100 plates (with 182 illustrations). Original full cloth binding shows old damp stain and wear, with some loss near spine. Text lightly damp stained along the bottom quarter. Not too obtrusive. Early pencil ownership of Thomas Cummings, a Lancaster, PA photographer from the late 1850's to the 1880's. The illustrations and text include the highest achievements of art, industry, mechanization, invention, science, commerce, etc. of Victorian America, with nice sections on similar areas world wide. There is even a good illustrated article on the Gatling Gun.The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, was the first official World's Fair in the U.S. Held in Philadelphia, PA, from May 10 to November 10, 1876, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration…
