Edition Princeps of this historical Greek romance, set during the period of the Peloponnesian War. The author, who identifies himself at the beginning of his work as a native of Aphrodisias in Caria and secretary to the orator Athenagoras, is believed to have flourished about the end of the fourth century. The original Greek text is followed by a Latin translation by J.J.Reiske, and copious notes by J.P.D’Orville (Volume II, with separate title), which Clarke commends as containing "a treasure of critical learning".
