The chapters in this volume were first presented as papers in a seminar series developed by Borje Ljunggren during the 1990-91 academic year. The papers--by economists, political scientists, anthropologists, Journalists, and aid administrators--emphasize human and policy issues concerning Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia since the end of the Second Indochina War in 1975. The authors analyze these market transformations from varying perspectives, including foreign policy, history, gender, macroeconomics, politics, and social issues. B�rje Ljunggren is the former Swedish ambassador to China (2002-06) and Vietnam (1994-97). Over the years he has served in a number of countries in Asia and has also been the head of the Asia Department of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Director General of the Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation (Sida). Currently, ambassador Ljunggren is responsible for the coordination of the Stockholm China Forum (GMF) within the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, chairperson of the SEB Asia Council and advisor to the Sweden-China Business Council. Ambassador Ljunggren also has a number of academic affiliations. He is a member of the board of governors of Lund University, a member of the board of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and the Cambodia Development Resource Institute, an advisor to the China Economic Research Center of the Stockholm School of Economics and an Associate of the Harvard University Asia Center and the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies. Ambassador Ljunggren holds a Ph. D. in political science and has published a number of books and articles on Asia including "The Challenge of Reform in Indochina".
