Philadelphia/Toronto: The John C. Winston Company, 1951. Arna Bontemps (1902-1973) was a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Initially a poet, he produced several highly-regarded novels; later he focused on lierature for youth. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, part of the "Land of the Free" series edited by Erick Berry. Light brick or orange cloth binding with titling in black on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xiii, 238 pages. Lightly toned, due to publisher's choice of stock. Illustrated by Cyrus Leroy Baldridge. Some very slight rub to margins, else a Fine copy. The dustjacket shows wear at the margins, with some light chipping. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Illus. by Cyrus Leroy Baldridge. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
