(BANK OF THE UNITED STATES). Established in 1791, the Bank of the United States was the country’s first central bank. Its very existence proved to be very controversial, and it didn’t see the renewal of its original twenty-year charter, though it existed in some form for the next few decades. DS. 1pg. February 28, 1800. A partially-printed check from the Bank of the United States. It was written out to John McLure for $958.33 and cashed in the bank’s Baltimore branch. It was signed “G Simpson, Cash” and endorsed “John McLure” on verso. It is in good condition with wear and a hole in the upper left corner.
