Chevalier D'eon Archive: Dragoon Cavalry Officer Acknowledges and Accepts D'eon's Transition Telling Him That He Has Even More Respect for Him with D'eon's Autographed Response de D'eon, Chevalier

Archive of two letters written to the Chevalier D'eon from Marquis D'Autichamp, who knew D'Eon while they were dragoons, with her handwritten nine line autographed response. The first letter is dated the 12th of November, 1781. D'Eon received a medal as a dragoon and even won approval to wear it as a woman once he had made his transition. In 1777, D'Eon returns to France from England as a man, wearing his dragoon uniform. Marie Antoinette caused her own dressmaker to supply Chevalier D'Eon with whatever was necessary. While the clothes were being made, he visited his aged mother at Tonnerre. He then took female clothing for some time, but grew tired of it and attempted to join the Navy, but is arrested and held at the Castle of Dijon for some time. He was

Long letter regarding the Chevalier de Nigry-Clermont, giving the conditions required to be admitted in the gendarmerie. "He would have an obstacle that he should be at least 5'4" because the way we are armed and riding requires this necessity. I must tell you that 200 [?] of pension for your protege would not be enough if he does not show extreme prudence. Brave dragoons (D'Eon was one herself) are welcome in the gendarmerie. If his parents an offer 100-200 Francs, he could possibly live with it. The little tenderness that money brings... He needs to bring with him the certificate that I am sending you and an extract that shows he is in good health. The loss of the Duke of Broglie is a loss for the entire country and is an offense for the family which will not recover from it. The kids of the Duke of Broglie are well treated but you know that this country easily forgets all the services given.... Send me your news, I am always interested. I was very attached to you as the dragoon captain. The new forms that you have taken has never been wrong as far as I am concerned. If anything, I have higher respect for you.

D'Eon both writes a couple lines on the front of the letter and nine lines on the back before signing. D'Eon writes in his hand, "On the 8th of May, write a letter of recruitment on the subject of my nephew Donald Chevalier D'Eon, an applicant to the Marine Guard and to recommend again the Chevalier de Nigry-Clermont send me the letter for the gendarmerie commander after he receives it."

The second letter is from the Marquis D'Autichamps to the Chevalier D'eon. "Paris Palais Bourbon". January 5, 1778. This autograph letter addressed on verso to "Mademoiselle Chevaliere D'Eon". marquis d'Autichamps was a colonel in the regiment of Apchon dragoons and future Vendée general in the Royalist army. This letter from the Marquis d'Autichamps discusses the purchase of a horse which will be ridden by an English groom on the boulevard (des Champs Élysées) in his company, I will let you know what I think about it and if he can tell me agree on..
