Fine Condition. Delicate pith paintings created by local Chinese artists gained popularity among Western travelers and merchants starting around 1825. These exquisite paintings, executed on pith paper, were produced in port cities to cater to the Western demand for authentic Chinese souvenirs. The scenes depicted in these artworks often captured everyday life in China, as well as decorative images of birds, insects, and flowers. The unique quality of pith paper, made from the thin slices of the stem of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, lent itself well to watercolor application. Its translucent and velvety texture allowed for vibrant colors, resulting in an attractive embossed surface. It will not be possible to post this group of pictures overseas within the mount as shown, but we are quite happy to remove the mount for easy posting. Within the UK it will be sent as the entire mounted sheet, or if the buyer prefers we can remove the mount. There is a tiny bit of damage to two of the pictures at a corner, not affecting the images at all, and a couple of others have mild creases, again not causing any loss.
