Cohn 544. 18 cm; 8vo. Bound in brown calf with gilt-ruled covers and spine, morocco title and author labels on the spine are chipped, top page edge gilt, back repaired, original back strip preserved. A good copy, bright and fresh. Wear at extremities of spine.

This version of The Tales of Chekhov featuring the famous story "The Lady with the Dog" is extremely rare. The original story was published in 1899 and there was an English translation as early as 1903, but this version was among the first Chekhov translations by the famous Russian-to-English translator Constance Garnett. The book is ex-library, but from a retirement community library with few readers--although it is stamped on the endpapers and title page. Two previous owners inscribed the front endpaper in ink: "Gordon Steward Crawford, July 19, 1933" and "Raymond Cunningham, March 18, 1940"

1824 ARCTIC Voyage 1ed William Parry North Pole Eskimos Polar Exploration MAPS

An exceedingly rare and valuable 1824 edition of William Parry's personal account from his second voyage to the Northwest Passage. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

The Arctic Bibliography says of this work:
"Abstracts from the author's journals of his three voyages to the Canadian arctic waters; of his attempt to reach the North Pole and his account of the Eskimos."

This work includes 38 impressive, engraved maps and illustrations after the sketches of Captain Lyon, many of which illustrated the domestic lives of Eskimos. It also includes a vocabulary of the Eskimo language. Note what these references say of this work.

Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

Integral publishers advert leaves at the end of each volume (iii, i, ii) but bound without the publishers catalogue in volume one. Some minor foxing to a few pages but generally a very good clean copy finely re-bound by Bayntun of Bath. Half brown morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. Loosely inserted is a 4pp hand written letter from the author (" Your affectionate Dinah") to "My Dear Alice" ( her God Daughter, the subject of the poem "My Godchild Alice"), closely written in black ink on four sides of folded leaf, each side measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches. The letter is undated but circa 1859 and discusses, among other things, the publisher Alexander Macmillan's approval of Clarence Dobell's illustrations for her… Leer más

"A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea." 1840 1st Edition, 2nd Issue (the letter "i" in the word "in" within the top line on the copyright page is lacking the dot, and with broken letter "i" within the running title at the top of page 9); Harper & Brothers ("Harpers' Family Library, No. CVI); New York.Condition:Light soiling and foxing to covers and spine; nearly the entire length of the left edge of the spine is separated from the back cover; sharp corners. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose pages. Overall the pages are in very good condition - mostly clean and white with occasional light foxing to some random pages; heavier foxing to the front and rear end papers. The front end papers have some pencil writing and a previous owner's bookplate. Overall a nice copy - would be very good if not for the tear along the left edge of the spine.

One gathering slightly sprung. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt and black decorative band across the top of the front board and the top and bottom of the spine. Black decorative roll to the bottom of the front board. Title on gilt to the middle of the front board. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Rear board with blind stamped floral roll to the top and bottom. Floral decorative endpapers. Neat two line inscription to the front free endpaper. The rear endpapers have an early previous owner's name and address written in red crayon to the free endpaper and a few short lines to the pastedown. Cloth a bit rubbed to the edges and a couple of small marks to the boards but overall a very good copy. An uncommon and attractive nineteenth century edition, printed in New York by J. J. Size: 8°, 370 pages + 2 pages advertisememts and 32 pages 'Magasin D'Education Et De Recreation'. Separated Attachment 'Carte de l'Afrique Centrale' is unfortunately missing (the map of Africa was not printed throughout the text like in later editions). Contemporary half maroquin with gilt quarters on spine and gilt edges. One frontispiece (with tissue) and 23 fullpage illustrations(with tissues) and several small illustrations throughout the text. Illustrators: Édouard Riou and Henri de Montaut.
Book is in very good condition with a little bumping to the corners and little rubbing to the edges of the boards and the spine. Front free endpaper has been torn in the middle. The pages are bright and clean but some have little foxing.This is an extremly attractive and scarce edition of Jules Verne's first book.
