Bound in publisher's blind stamped blue cloth; corners slightly bumped; re-backed preserving original gilt cloth spine - some wear, spots of discoloring, a couple letters faded. Endpapers are renewed in matching cream paper. Old inscription written on half title dated 1853; tiny date stamp on upper corner of title page; rear fly-leaf marked "National Library of Canada Seen by NLC." No other institutional markings. Scattered foxing - usually mild (heavier on verso blanks of some plates). The frontispiece map displays light but uniformly distributed foxing; 3-4 plates contain heavier spots of foxing - mostly marginal. A generally sound and attractive copy. 120 finely hand-coloured engravings based on [uncredited] illustrations by William Alexander (China, Austria, England), Johann Gottlieb Georgi (Russia) and Octavian Dalvimart (Turkey).
A collection of exotic trades people from some of the most famous travel books of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Images of Chinese Mandarins, actors and punishments, Turkish soldiers, harem guards and dervishes, Russian shamans, Bohemians and Romani peoples, and English fisherwomen and Scottish soldiers.
Title page and 16 introductory text pages to China volume only, but all other volumes with 24 hand-coloured plates and 2 pages of explanatory text to each plate.

Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
