Il viaggio inizia a Kuldja, prosegue a Tien Shan fino a Kashgar, Khotan, il passo del Karakoram fino a Ladakh. L' obiettivo di Lansdell era consegnare una lettera dell'arcivescovo di Canterbury al Dalai Lama, che sperava gli avrebbe concesso l'accesso all'allora chiusa capitale del Tibet a Lhasa. Alla fine non riuscì ad ottenere il permesso necessario e dovette accontentarsi di acquistare oggetti da un commerciante che era stato in Tibet.“Henry Lansdell (1841-1919) was one of the great travellers of the Victorian age.
