Thirty years ago, Christian Boltanski's first one-man exhibition opened in Paris, in May 1968, one of the epochal events of modern history. That is to say, his "advent" or artistic "arrival" happened during and coincided with the moment of "rupture" - Alain Badiou's central philosophical concept - whose significance continues to inspire and be felt to this day. As such, "if his work is examined retrospectively and compared to what young artists are producing today, a considerable number of connections is revealed which denote identification between different creative approaches as well as his considerable influence" (Gloria Moure) . That is to say, Boltanski's irreverent - and honest - stance towards "May 1968" youthful idealism recognizes yet ultimately transcends the latter: "Art is not separate from life but its highest form". Now that he is dead - July 14, 2021, his "departure" time - the grief one feels for the vanished Life is somehow mitigated by the timeless beauty of the Art.
