Jean Froissart, The Chronicles of England, France, Spain . . . And Other Places Adjoining. Translated by John Bourchier, 2nd Baron Berners. London: Richard Pynson, 28 January 1523 - 31 August 1525.
Bouchier's translation of Froissart's Chronicle was the primary source for Shakespeare's Richard II, especially for his characterization of John of Gaunt.
Froissart lived at court in the reigns of Edward III and Richard II, and his four-volume Chronicle was based on first-hand interviews with many of the leading figures of the age. Lord Berners was Lord Chancellor under King Henry VIII, and undertook the translation of the Chronicle into English at the request of Henry VIII.
FIRST EDITION. Folio. 269 leaves. Signatures: D-3H⁶ 3I. Lacking all before D¹ and all after 3I¹. English text in black letter, printed in double columns. Woodcut initials; others with small guide capitals. Early annotations throughout. Modern half calf, somewhat rubbed.
