Jack Kerouac, in this month of November 2023, would have been 101 years old. He died on October 21, 1969, at the age of 47: he lived the last months of his life in a modest bungalow at 5169 10th Avenue North, in St. Petersburg, Florida, in the company of his mother Gabrielle-Ange, with whom he conversed all his life in French - and his third wife Stella. His mother survived him by four years, his wife, Stella, by 21. When he died, his brother, John Sampas, became the executor of the Kerouac family archives and property.

In the last years of the 1960s, if there was one last destination that haunted him, it was Brittany, France, his roots. Kerouac became increasingly concerned with it, declaiming in "Big Sur", facing the Pacific, that "My name is Le Bris de Keroac, I'm going to sink my healthy Anglo-Saxon teeth into the pitiful flesh of fish, I'd better remember that fish speak Breton."

So it was time for him to cross the Atlantic at last. He did so in 1965, on a journey that was as memorable as it was disastrous, which he recounted in part in "Satori à Paris": "Arriving in Paris, Kerouac went to the publisher who had translated "On the Road" in 1960: Gallimard. His appearance did not inspire confidence. The ladies of the house wouldn't have believed it was him. At the Bibliothèque Nationale, the employees in charge of book communication told him that the Histoire généalogique de plusieurs maisons illustres de Bretagne that he had requested had disappeared from the shelves. They wanted to get rid of a suspicious client" (Jean Lebrun, Kerouac, au bout de la route, la Bretagne, in Le Vif de l'histoire, France Inter, March 2022). He then went to Brest, not without having lost his suitcase at Orly and then missed the Air Inter flight, heading for the Cité bookshop via the Gare Montparnasse to 57 rue de Siam, not far from the harbour, run by a certain Pierre Le Bris de Kerouac. Kerouac thought he was getting closer to a cousin. The two men got to know each other and ended up agreeing that they were not related...

Was it during this trip that Kerouac brought back a copy of The Fall? Probably.

Gallimard used to send him the French editions of his copies, but rarely other works, apart from those that might have been sent directly to him.

As a teenager, Kerouac had discovered the reading of novels and assiduously frequented the Lowell public library, where he devoured the great American and French authors: there he read, in the original version, Proust, Balzac, Rimbaud, then Verlaine, Genet, Cendrars, Camus and Céline, his favourite writer. It was in his father's printing shop that he learned to type and acquired a formidable typing dexterity that his friends would rave about.

Jack Kerouac, en ce mois de septembre 2023, aurait eu 101 ans. Il est mort le 21 octobre 1969, à l'âge de 47 ans : il a vécu les derniers mois de sa vie dans un modeste bungalow au 5169 10th Avenue North, à St. Petersburg, en Floride, en compagnie de sa mère Gabrielle-Ange, avec qui il aura conversé toute sa vie en français - et de sa troisième femme Stella. Ruiné, méprisé par les critiques et plombé par des années d'alcoolisme et de fuite en avant ; sa mère lui survivra quatre ans, sa femme, Stella, 21 ans. A sa mort, c'est son frère, John Sampas, qui devient l'exécuteur testamentaire des archives et des biens de la famille Kerouac.

Dans ces dernières années 1960, si une dernière destination le hantait, c'était la Bretagne, la France, ses racines. Kerouac s'en préoccupe de plus en plus, déclamant dans " Big Sur ", face au Pacifique, que "Mon nom est Le Bris de Keroac, je vais enfoncer mes dents saines d'anglo-saxon dans la chair pitoyable des poissons, je ferais mieux de me souvenir que les poissons parlent breton." Il sera donc temps pour lui, enfin, de traverser l'Atlantique. C'est chose faite en 1965, dans un voyage aussi mémorable que désastreux, qu'il relatera en partie dans " Satori à Paris " : " Arrivé à Paris, Kerouac passe chez l'éditeur qui a traduit " Sur la route " en 1960 : Gallimard. Sa dégaine n'inspire pas confiance. Les dames de la maison n'auraient pas cru qu'il était lui. A la Bibliothèque Nationale, ce sont les employés à la communication des livres qui lui disent que l'Histoire généalogique de plusieurs maisons illustres de Bretagne qu'il demandait avait disparu des rayons. Ils veulent se débarrasser d'un client suspect " (Jean Lebrun, Kerouac, au bout de la route, la Bretagne, in Le Vif de l'histoire, France Inter, mars 2022). Il se rend ensuite à Brest, non sans avoir égaré sa valise à Orly puis raté le vol d'Air Inter, direction la librairie de la Cité via la gare Montparnasse jusqu'à au 57 rue de Siam, non loin de la rade, tenue par un certain Pierre Le Bris de Kerouac. Kerouac pense alors se rapprocher d'un cousin. Les deux hommes faisant connaissance, finissent par convenir hélas qu'ils ne sont pas parents...

Est-ce au cours de ce voyage de Kerouac rapporte l'exemplaire de La Chute ? C'est probable.

Gallimard avait pour habitude de lui envoyer les éditions françaises de ses exemplaires, mais rarement d'autres ouvrages, hormis ceux qui pouvaient lui avoir été directement adressé (comme c'est le cas du Delteil, que nous présentons également).

Adolescent, Kerouac avait découvert la lecture des romans et fréquente assidûment la bibliothèque municipale de Lowell, où il dévore les grands auteurs américains, mais aussi français : il y lit, dans le texte en version originale, Proust, Balzac, Rimbaud, puis Verlaine, Genet, Cendrars, Camus et Céline, son écrivain favori. C'est dans l'imprimerie de son père qu'il apprend à taper à la machine et qu'il y acquiert une redoutable dextérité de frappe dont s'extasieront ses amis.
