Sobre este artículo

London: The Hogarth Press, 1959. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 8.5" by 6". John Ward. A first edition, first impression of a delightful and best-selling autobiographical novel by Laurie Lee, complete with an unclipped dust wrapper. Based on the author's experiences growing up in the small village of Slad, Gloucestershire, this work was the first of a trilogy, following by 'As I Walked Our One Midsummer Morning' and 'A Moment of War'.Written by Laurie Lee (1914-1997), an English novelist best known for this popular work. The first edition, first impression, with issue points 'a fire at the piano-works almost every year' on page 272. This was removed from later impressions as the result of a libel.Complete with the original unclipped dust wrapper. With the ownership inscription of David Esdaile dated 1960 to the front endpaper.A true first edition of this popular autobiographical work. In the publisher's original full cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Dust wrapper is worn with loss to the head and tail of the spine, a closed tear to the head of the front board and wear to the front fly leaf resulting in a tear to the front board. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

Sinopsis

Laurie Lee was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, and was educated at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. In his teens Lee had already began to write poems. He had met two sisters who encouraged him in his writing aspirations. At the age of nineteen he walked to London and then travelled on foot through Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the Civil War. He later returned by crossing the Pyrenees, as described in his book As I Walked Out one Midsummer Morning . During World War II he made documentary films for the General Post Office film unit (1939-40), and the Crown Film Unit (1941-43). From 1944 to 1946 he worked as an editor at the Ministry of Information Publications. In 1950 he married Catherine Polge and they had one daughter. He died in May 1997.
