The spine and covers are faded and the endpapers are lightly dampstained at the bottom edge. "The circus as we know it today owes its origins to Philip Astley, a one-time Sergeant-Major in the 15th Light Dragoons, who gave his exhibitions of equestrian expertise, and later of performing animals, in London in the 1770s" - from the first chapter.
