Dennis was the first modern investigator of ancient Etruria and Etruscan archaeological sites, and this, his magnum opus, is the most complete and authoritative 19th-century account of the ancient Etruscan civilization, first published by the British Museum in 1848. It was the result of his extensive travels in Etruria, often in the company of the artist Samuel Ainsley, exploring Tarquinia and other important Etruscan sites.
