Jacobs, author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities, "shows how economic life expands and develops, on the one hand, as cities replace their imports with goods of their own production and improvise innovations on that foundation, and how they, and all the wide-ranging economic life they influence, decline and decay when these vital city processes falter and halt.
