THE conference on Romano-British Cantonal Capitals, which was held at Leicester University in December 1963, was the outcome of a discussion between Mr David Clarke, then Keeper of Antiquities at the City Museum, and the Editor. It was organized by the University's Department of Adult Education. Between 270 and 280 people attended, and heard a series of short papers describing recent discoveries at Exeter, Chichester, Silchester, Canterbury, Dorchester, Winchester, Leicester, and Wroxeter. Six longer papers taking broader views of the subject were also given, together with an introductory talk by Professor Sir Ian Richmond, and a final summing-up by A. L. F. Rivet.
