Good/No Jacket. 597 pages, with Index of Mythological Subjects and Sources, Index of Modern Authors and Artists, Rules for Pronunciation. 189 b&w illustrations, on single-sided plates against pale peach background and line drawings as cuts, color maps of Greece and Italy, each across two plates. New Edition Revised and Enlarged (first was published 1893). The author was professor of English and Classics at U. of California-Berkeley, whose lectures were so popular that they sometimes were held in an outdoor amphitheatre to accommodate guest listeners. 8vo, bluish black cloth with faded gilt lettering on sunned spine, blind-stamped title and colophon on front board, light blotches on boards, very faded blue or gray topstain, heavy wear to crown/heel/corners, edges/end papers/page margins age-toned, hinges loose (front one shows cracking), binding loose at p. 311 but all pages attached, pull-out "family tree" on tissue paper is somewhat rumpled and misfolded, a few pages accidentally dog-eared at bottom. Name of former owner written on ffep, underscoring and/or margin marks observed on approximately 15 pages.
