Pp. 312, original purple cloth with gilt lettered brown leather skiver label on spine, the boards lightly flecked and rubbed, edges faded and fore-corners lightly bruised, spine faded to brown and slightly creased at head and foot; faint damp stains to fore-edges of leaves, scattered foxing; Collins & Hannay, Publishers, New York, 1833. First U.S. edition. Wellcome II, p. 503. *First translation into English of Volume I of Dupuytren's Lecons orales de clinique chirurgicale (4 volumes, 1832-34, see Garrison & Morton 5590). Also issued under the imprints of Carter, Hendee & Co. (Boston), and De Silver & Thomas (Philadelphia) in the same year. Guillaume Dupuytren (1777-1835) was head surgeon at the Paris hospital Hotel-Dieu. He began his career as a military surgeon, treating Napoleon's haemorrhoids. He is best known today for his description of Dupuytren's contracture, a thickening and tightening of tissue under the skin in the hand, named after him.
