Very clean and unmarked with slight wear to spine heel. Sewn binding is tight, solid and square. Pages toned, completely clean and free from any markings. A handsme volume. Historical novel originally published in 1861, set in the 1400s. Charles Reade was considered to be the natural successor of Charles Dickens. Today he is known primarily for "The Cloister and the Hearth" and "Griffith Gaunt". The Cloister and the Hearth is an historical novel with the action taking place on the Continent in the late 15th century. Reade introduces various historical characters into the narrative--Froissart, Gringoire, Deschamps, Luther, Villon, and, as a child, Erasmus.The story centers around the tragically thwarted love of Erasmus' parents. 745 pages. 9.5" x 6.25" x 1.8". 1932, The Heritage Press, New York.
