Founded in Paris in 1948 by artists and writers principally from Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands, Cobra was one of the most important new revolutionary art movements in Europe in the immediate post-war years. Lambert traces the origins of Cobra in detail, discussing its sources in Belgian surrealism and in Danish avant-garde art of the late 1930s. He stresses the importance of Cobra as one of the major components of Western art in the second half of the 20th century, side by side with art informel and abstract expressionism. - from the dj flap.
