Nice: Plaisir du Livre, 1972-73. [1973]., [1973].. Very good. LIMITED EDITION ON VELIN DE RIVES - Quarto, 11-1/4 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide. Two volumes uniformly bound in full maroon morocco with elaborate illustrations and decorations embossed in blind and black on the covers with a central illustrated panel and vignettes at each of the 4 corners framed in gilt. Gilt and blind rules frame the margins of the covers. Gilt-titled leather labels and gilt decorations within raised bands adorn the spines. The top edges of each volume are gilt. The volumes are additionally housed in a red marbled slipcases with leather-lined openings. The slipcases are slightly rubbed. The head and tail of the spines of both volumes are slightly rubbed. 183 & [8] pages; and 183 & [12] pages respectively. The set is sumptuously illustrated with colored pochoirs after Asaldi. The brightly colored illustrations include 2 title vignettes, a double-page plate, 10 "culs-de-lampe" textual illustrations, and 28 full-page "hors-texte" plates with tissue guards. Near fine.
This is copy 1240 of a limited edition of 3060 copies on velin de Rives.
"Acheve d'imprimer le trente et un aout mil neuf cent soixante-douze sur les presses de la societe d'editions d'art Le Chant des Spheres a Nice". [Quoted from the colophon of volume 1.]
An illustrated certificate of authenticity, laid in at the front of the second volume, states that "Colas Breugnon de Romain Roland est l'oeuvre d'artistes - miniaturistes, maquettistes, coloristes, graveur et imprimeurs ayant travaille dan l'enthousiasme et l'emotion creatice, sous la direction artistique de Joseph Pardo. Toutes les illustrations ont ete creees par Ansaldi et gravees a la main par Robert Altheimer. L'Atelier 'Arts et Couleurs' a effectue au pochoir et en serigraphie d'art, la reproduction de la grande planche...."
