This collection of works include: 'Method and Results', 'Darwiniana', 'Science and Education', 'Science and Hebrew', and 'Discourse Biological and Geological'. Written by Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist and anthropologist specialising in comparative anatomy. He became known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Bookplate to the front paste down of each volume, showing that this collection once belonged to Sir William Eden, 7th and 5th Baronet (1849-1915). Sir William was a British politician, former colonel and local magistrate, described as eccentric and often foul-tempered. NY, Appleton, 1903, hardcover, dark burgundy cloth, clean sound ex-library copy with usual library marks including spine label, card pockets in the rear, matching binder tape reinforce top and base of the spine, and spine was shellaced a long time ago, text mildly and evenly age-toned, sound square tight copy, attractive, mild wear to cover extremities, inner hinges sound and uncracked...although it is marked as a first edition by the publisher (a 1 on the last page of text in parentheses) it is not a first American edition...still a decent sound reading copy, 4-7/8""x7-3/8"", 475pp, no dust jacket
