Sidgwick and Jackson, London., 1923-1937. First edition. Octavo. Three volumes: pp xiv, 234; xii, 240; xxiv, 343. The first two volumes, bot published in 1923, have frontispiece etchings by Albert Rutherston; the third volume, published in 1937, has a preface by Lascelles Abercrombie and a frontispiece photogravure portrait. Red buckram covers with bevelled edges. Top edges gilt.The first two volumes are presentation copies from the author to the woman who was his secretary for 17 years, W. Gwyn Jeffreys, inscribed on the front free endpapers: ''Jeff from John Drinkwater - November 1st 1923. also December 25th 1923''; ''This second volume also is Jeff's. John Drinkwater. Nov. 1923.'' The third volume was published shortly after Drinkwater's death.Fading to spines of first two volumes. Small patches of fading to bottom edge of front cover of the first volume. Slight fading to front cover of second volume. The third volume is fine in a defective dustwrapper.
