Bierce signed only the first volume number one but each volume thereafter was hand labeled as #19 either by he or his amanuensis. All covers with richly gilded turn-ins and purple silk. Measurements are 8 5/8 x 5 7/8 x 2". Bierce, a prolific American author and Civil War veteran, was known for his biting political writing and his mysterious disappearance in 1914, 2 years after volume XII of The Collected Works was published. Scotson Clark's well-known caricature of Bierce dragging a pen from a scabbard is the undying portrait of the man" (Starrett).
