Privately Printed, 1950. Com[lete 2 volume set bound in covered flexible boards with punch binding, fully illustrated with some color but mostly black and white photos with many of the illustration folding, pages are not numbered but each volume is about 1.5 inches thick. I know very little about this set. The books are written and titled in Oriental script. I have been unable to translate, nor have I been able to have the books translated. Even the date of publication is a guess and may be very wrong. For ease of description, I have called the books volume I and II. Volume I is bound a tan paper covered with a leaf pattern with small squares with a pasted on title label with wear along the edges on both panels. The rear panel has heavier wear and the lower corner has been creased and bumped, lightly soiled. Inside: end papers are of a drawing of deer, red chop mark on first and last page with a mirror image on the opposite page as the book was closed before the chop mark was totally dry, first few (less than 10) paged have a pencil translation of the work pictured and the artist. This volume seems to be dedicated to some screens,(about half the pages), vessels in many materials (pottery, wood, etc.) books, trays and some furniture. Volume II is bound in a greenish floral design with a bird with a blue background at the top front corner with a pasted-on title label. The edges are worn with the heaviest wear at the tips of the corners and ends of the spine. Inside: an illustrated strip runs inside both covers, a red chop mark is only on the first page with a mirror on the end paper, no pencil translations, light marginal discoloration on the title page. This book seems to be mainly scrolls, fans, paintings, small ceramic boxes, tea equipment, chops, and carved cylindrical objects. Both books have a bit of discoloration of the tissue protecting some of the illustrations each book comes in a cardboard box with a title along the spine, heavy edge wear with some tearing and old English language labels. Images available. USPS tracking used on all domestic shipments. This set weighs nearly 13 pounds and will require additional postage for Priority or International shipment. . No Edition Stated. Softcover. Very Good/ . Boxed.

1946. [SKETCH TOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist. SAIGOKU SAN-JU^-SAN-SHO JUNREI EMAKI. Kyoto, Kanao Bun'endo^, publisher. Sho^wa 21 [1946]. Oblong folio of o^ban size woodblock prints after designs by Hiromitsu, detailing the famous pilgrimage sites (and sights) in western Japan. The blocks were cut by Okada Seijiro^ and the printers were Nishimura Kumakichi and Takagi Kiyomitsu. This portfolio project was initially completed and printed in 1925. This edition, printed from the same blocks at the very end of Kanao's life, was obviously issued as a companion piece to the THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF OSAKA, which Kanao also published in 1946. The colors of the original 1925 edition were quite a bit more light and "crumbly" than the bolder colors used in this printing, which accord with that used in the Osaka series. (I personally like this bolder approach to Hiromitsu's work.) There are eleven color woodblock printed preliminary pages, a table of contents page, 37 pilgrimage views, a final portrait of…

Neat pencilled annotations lower corners, leaves clean and bright. 26 x 38cm. This beautiful album proved very popular and was reprinted a number of times, in some editions all of the plates are in colour, as is the case with this copy, and at other times the edition only shows some plates in colour and while the others are in black and white. The work also appears in editions both with and without 2 maps, later editions in Western bindings. Although his name does not appear in this album it seems highly likely that this album was published by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929). "Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. The Sakuteiki contains the first systematic record of this new… Leer más

From flyleaf: Between the years 1814 and 1878 there was published in Japan a series of woodblock printed volumes entitled Hokusai Manga, or Hokusai's Sketches from Life, which was destined to be one of the most popular art publications ever issued anywhere in the world. With its rich tapestry of life as it was lived in the boisterous Tokyo of the day and its magical evocation of the beauties of the Japanese countryside, it was an immediate best-seller in Japan, and then, upon the West's discovery of Japanese art, went on to win the hearts of people everywhere. It is from this amazing book, amazing both in execution and breadth of scope, that the… Leer más
