Irish novelist's most famous work, based on the 1819 murder of fifteen-year-old Irish Catholic Ellen Scanlan (née Hanley) at the hands of an assassin hired by her husband, Protestant Irishman John Scanlan. The work was first published in 1829 and quickly adapted for the stage as "The Colleen Bawn" by Dion Boucicault.
