First Edition of this important and charming work on garden design, a "necessary companion volume to the author's Rural Residences and of greater rarity" (Abbey), discussing "specific techniques for achieving [the] integration of architecture and landscape. . . . He must have "qualifications both of the painter and sculptor; and the power of combining the theories of art with scientific excellence.'" (Archer). This "well printed [book] with pleasing little plates and readable text" (Prideaux) originated as a series of 34 articles, each consisting of a single plate and accompanying description, appearing in Ackermann's Repository between 1819 and 1821. Papworth chose 28 of these fine aquatints (including ones of an aviary, dairy, ice house, laundry, poultry house, Venetian tent, bath and apiary) to be included here and added revised and expanded descriptions with "an important new introductory essay" (Archer).
