REVIEW COPY WITH PUBLICATION DATE STAMPED AT THE TOP OF THE FRONT FLAP AND SLIP LAID-IN / TRANSLATED BY R. R. PALMER . LEFEBVRE IS CONSIDERED A LEADING AUTHORITY ON THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. LEFEBVRE'S ACCOUNT OF THE ORIGINS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION, "QUATRE-VINGT-NEUF",WAS PUBLISHED IN 1939 TO MARK THE SESQUINCENTENIAL OF THE EVENTS OF 1789, BUT THE VICHY GOVERNMENT SUPPRESSED THE BOOK, ORDERING 8,000 COPIES TO BE BURNED. AS A RESULT THE WORK WAS VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN ITS NATIVE LAND UNTIL A 1970 REPRINT. IT'S REPUTATION WAS ALREADY SECURE IN THE ENGLISH WORLD, HOWEVER, SINCE THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION, "THE COMING OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION" (1947) HAD ESTABLISHED IT AS A CLEAR, YET SUBTLE, CLASSIC. IT IS A SEMINAL BOOK THAT STILL WIELDS EXPLANATORY POWER ON THE COMPLEX CAUSES OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. LIGHT BLUE CLOTH COVERED BOARDS WITH TITLES IN GILT IN A DARK BLUE BOX ON THE SPINE IN CREAM COLORED PRINTED D.J. BOOK IS SLIGHTLY DISCOLORED ALONG THE PERIMETER BUT OTHERWISE A FINE UNMARKED COPY. D.J. HAS SOME VERY MODEST CORNER WEAR WITH SPINE PANEL DARKENED AND CREASED, AND IS NOT PRICE CLIPPED. AN EXCELLENT CLEAN AND TIGHT COPY OF A VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION ESPECIALLY IN D.J. .
