The author divides riders into 3 groups: beginners and those who ride weekends for the fun of it; the intermediate group who hunt and ride in horse shows; and the top group who wish to school horses and become truly expert horsemen. He gives, step by step, practical instructions required for good riding and sound horses in each group. Binding tight, text clean. There is a light stain along the bottom edge, and some other light edge soil. The jacket is water-stained along the bottom edge with the red dye from the cover transferring. With two chapters by Alexis Wrangel. Edited and designed by Eugene V. Connett. Although Littauer's emphasis on forward movement at the expense of collected gaits seems one-sided today, he was a highly educated and influential horseman whose detailed advice is still valuable for all levels of riders.
