He knew the jungle both as a conservator of nature and wildlife and as a killer of men and women. His jungle skills were used by the British Government firstly in undermining the Japanese during World War II and then challenging the Communists in the Malayan 'Emergency' where the jungle provided the insurgents with many a safe haven.
