Sobre este artículo

London : J and J Bonwicke, R Wilkin, S Birt, T Ward and E Wicksteed, 1737 A very good copy of the third English edition in new half calf binding with marbled boards. When Pierre Pomet first published the work in France in 1684, a wealth of discoveries were being made through voyages to tropical regions. This book was the first to look at the new products - whether plant, animal or mineral being made available for european use. It was translated into English in 1712 and became a handbook for apothecaries. Pierre Pomet (1658-1699) had a practice in Paris as well his position as Chief Druggist to Louis XIV. The binding has raised bands with gilt lines to spine and a red title label. It is in fine condition. The pastedown endpapers have been replaced and there is the signature of Sarah Mainwaring to the fep. The title page also has her signature, crossed out, at the top. Contents: title page in red and black; dedication 3pp; Preface 7pp; sources named in the work 7pp; catalogue of seeds 5pp; text 419 pp with 86 plates (2 folding) - the text is divided into 2 books with a heading indicating Book II at p 225; index 9pp; finis. The plates are particularly interesting because some cover scenes showing the manufacture of products from raw materials, and the plates of animals mix myth and reality. The contents are in very good clean condition with light toning. Margins, whilst not encroaching on text, look slightly trimmed. Book size: 23.5 cm x 18.9 cm.

Sobre E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
