London: Printed for John and Francis Rivington 1775. 8vo.Illustrated. 3rd Hawkins Edition. lxxviii, 304, xlviii, 128, [8] pp. Full brown calf with gilt lettering & decoration to spine and ruling to boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. With 2 frontispieces, 14 plates - including two of sheet music - and numerous in-text engravings of fish. Text is in two parts, the first subtitled 'Being A Discourse on Rivers, Fish-ponds, Fish, and Fishing' and the second 'Being Instructions how to Angle for a Trout or Grayling in a clear Stream'. Some splitting to the head and tail of spine and some general chipping to leather. A little rubbing to spine and edges alongside scratching to the boards. Foxing scattered throughout, some offsetting to the text and ink blots to the first frontispiece and the rear index pages. With a bookplate to the front pastedown and ownership inscription to the prelims. Binding firm. Written in both verse and prose, this 3rd edition of the Walton's classic work on fishing is not only an instructive guide to angling but a celebration of nature and the English countryside. . Very good in rebacked 1/2 red leather and it's original, blind embossed, red cloth covered boards with five gilt rules on the spine with no text to identify the title. A 12mo of 7 1/4 by 5 inches with a Brooklyn (New York?) address written on the front paste down and an early prior owner's name and date (1849) written in pencil on both the first and second free end pages and a penciled quotation written at the top of the fly title page. There are a few inconsequential marginal dampness stains with the body of the text block. Pasted to the bottom of page 53 is a short newspaper notice of a 3 pound 7 oz. Long Island trout having been caught with a penciled date of March 20, 1851. Page 60 is missing the print for approximately 20% of the page a problem caused during the printing process which was not caught before binding. The contents are largely free of foxing and tanning.
