New Edition. The Illustrated Pocket Library of Plain and Coloured Books. A facsimile of the second edition published by John Major in 1824. 16mo up to 6½" tall. 416 pp. with a small spine label bound-in between final text page and free endpaper. Red cloth boards with paper title block to spine. Boards have general wear with a tiny worm hole midway along outside spine joint affecting inner hinge with a tiny loss of paper. Contents are in generally fine condition with browning to free endpapers front and back with some transfer to pastedowns. The Complete (Compleat) Angler was first published in 1653 and remains enduringly popular with 1,097 editions published between 1653 and 2019 in 9 languages.

First part written by Isaac Walton. Second part written by Charles Cotton. Advertisements to front. Presumed Ninth edition. Book has been rebound. Contains black and white illustrated plates. Severe cracking to rear hinge causing board to be loose. First few pages up to page VI are loose. Pages are moderately tanned with noticeable foxing throughout. Paper remnants with glue markings to front endpaper and hinge. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Plates are moderately tanned and foxed. Occasional water staining. Faint black marks throughout. Text remains legible. Occasional chipping to edges. Boards have heavy edge wear with corner bumping. Leather peeling heavily to all surfaces, with loss to corners and spine ends. Large split to rear joint. Visible scuffing and markings to boards. Glue marks to front.

Cl. lettered in gilt on spine (apparently a later binding) pp. xx, 314 (170 x 105 x about 26 mm thick). Some light marking or stains to covers; internally near fine; overall very good copy

New York: John Wiley, 1848. Reprint of 1848. Very good in rebacked 1/2 red leather and it's original, blind embossed, red cloth covered boards with five gilt rules on the spine with no text to identify the title. A 12mo of 7 1/4 by 5 inches with a Brooklyn (New York?) address written on the front paste down and an early prior owner's name and date (1849) written in pencil on both the first and second free end pages and a penciled quotation written at the top of the fly title page. There are a few inconsequential marginal dampness stains with the body of the text block. Pasted to the bottom of page 53 is a short newspaper notice of a 3 pound 7 oz. Long Island trout having been caught with a penciled date of March 20, 1851. Page 60 is missing the print for approximately 20% of the page a problem caused during the printing process which was not caught before binding. The contents are largely free of foxing and tanning. Portrait frontis., extra vignette title page, 16 engraved plates. Bound in early 19th century half brown calf, professionally rebacked. Corners of rear board very worn. Marbled boards. Early 19th century ownership inscriptions. Occasional foxing and browning to pages otherwise a clean and sound copy.
