The appellative or common words in so full and large a manner, that any verse may be readily found by looking for any material word in it. In this part the various significations of the principal words are given, by which the plain meaning of many passages of scripture is shewn: an account of several Jewish customs and ceremonies is also added, which may serve to illustrate many parts of scripture. II. The proper names in the scriptures. To this part is prefixed a table, containing the significations of the words in the original languages from which they are derived. To which is added, a concordance to the books called Apocrypha. The whole digested in an easy and regular method; which, together with the various significations and other improvements now added, renders it more useful than any book of this kind hitherto published. Vying for knighthood and wealth, he got neither....ending up in asylums on numerous occasions. The self named Alexander The Corrector nonetheless created a work which to this day is "the" concordance for the bible.- Alexander Cruden was born in Aberdeen in Scotland (baptised on June 8, 1699, St. Nicholas Kirk, Aberdeen, according to recent research) and was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, and became an excellent Latin, Greek and Biblical scholar.-As well as producing the concordance, Cruden worked as a proofreader and bookseller, several editions of Greek and Latin classics are said to have owed their accuracy to his care. Cruden opened a booksellers shop in the Royal Exchange. In April 1735 he obtained the title of bookseller to the Queen by recommendation of the Lord Mayor and most of the Whig aldermen. The post was an unremunerative sinecure. After failing to obtain the honour of knighthood, he was nominated as Parliamentary candidate for the City of London in 1754, but he decided to withdraw. Some point after this, Cruden adopted the title of Corrector. Cruden saw it as his personal mission to safeguard the nation's spelling and grammar, and through that, the nation's moral health. He was particularly concerned with misspelt signs, graffiti, swearing and the keeping of the Sabbath."- This is a real nice copy and gift worthy and scarce!- Ref. 1981- Hare-33- Non-fiction-religion-concordance-bible (3412) Shipping has added cost due to size and weight of volume & insurance.
