Octavo, bound in full contemporary tree calf with elaborate gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the front and rear panel, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of Thomson. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable bound in full 20th century tree calf. Scottish poet and playwright James Thomson's best-known poems include The Castle of Indolence and The Seasons, which stimulated works by John Christopher Smith, Joseph Haydn, Thomas Gainsborough and J. M. W. Turner among many others. The poem was published one season at a time, Winter in 1726, Summer in 1727, Spring in 1728 and Autumn only in the complete edition of 1730.
