John Burroughs (1837–1921) was an American nature writer and acolyte of Walt Whitman. He brought a scientific rigor to the literature of the wild denouncing the sentimentality and anthropomorphism of such writers as Ernest Thompson Seton in the 1904 essay Real and Sham Natural History. A few years earlier he had been the official historian of the Harriman Expedition to Alaska
